Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to what families ask us most. If your question isn't here, reach out directly — we're happy to talk it through.

Is your service really free to families?

Yes, completely. We never charge families anything. Our service is paid for through referral fees from partner facilities — and only if you choose to move in. You're under no obligation at any point.

How are you paid?

Partner facilities pay us a referral fee when a family we referred moves in. That's it. We have no incentive to push you toward any particular home — our job is to find you the right fit, which is also what earns us the referral.

What's the difference between assisted living and memory care?

Assisted living is for people who need help with daily tasks — bathing, dressing, medications — but don't have significant cognitive impairment. Memory care is a specialized setting for people with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia. Memory care facilities have secured environments to prevent wandering, staff trained in dementia care, and programming designed for cognitive decline. In Arizona, some assisted living homes are licensed to provide memory care services in addition to standard assisted living.

How do I know if a home is licensed?

All assisted living homes in Arizona must be licensed by the Arizona Department of Health Services (AZDHS). You can verify any facility's license at the AZDHS online services portal. ALHHub's directory is built from AZDHS licensing data, so every home listed with us is a licensed facility.

What does assisted living cost in Arizona?

Costs vary by care type, location, and the level of care your loved one needs. Assisted living homes typically run $2,800–$5,500/month. Memory care runs higher, often $4,500–$7,500/month. Scottsdale and North Phoenix tend to be pricier than Tucson or the West Valley. See our full cost guide for a detailed breakdown.

Does Medicare cover assisted living?

No. Medicare does not cover assisted living. It may cover a short-term skilled nursing stay following a hospitalization, but ongoing residential assisted living is not a Medicare benefit. Medicaid (ALTCS in Arizona) can cover assisted living for those who qualify financially and medically.

What is ALTCS and do we qualify?

ALTCS is Arizona's Medicaid program for long-term care. It can cover the care costs of assisted living for people who meet both financial criteria (low income and limited assets) and medical criteria (requiring a nursing-facility level of care). See our ALTCS guide for details on eligibility and how to apply.

How quickly can we get placed?

It depends on how clear the match is and whether the right home has an opening. Some families are placed within a week; others take a month or more while we work through a waitlist or evaluate options. Urgent or hospital discharge placements are our top priority — we move as fast as possible in those situations.

What happens after I submit a request?

One of our placement specialists will reach out, usually within one business day. We'll ask a few questions about your loved one's care needs, location preferences, and budget. From there, we'll recommend homes that match, arrange tours, and help you evaluate your options — at whatever pace works for your family.

Can you help with urgent or hospital discharge placements?

Yes. Hospital discharge timelines are short and stressful, and we've helped many families navigate them. Tell us it's urgent and we'll prioritize it. We'll identify homes with available beds that match the care needs, coordinate with the facility, and help you move as fast as possible.

Do you cover all of Arizona?

Our directory includes licensed facilities statewide. Our placement specialists are most familiar with the Phoenix metro area and Tucson, but we work with families throughout Arizona.

What if we don't like the homes you suggest?

Then we keep looking. We're not going to push you into a home that doesn't feel right. Tell us what didn't work about the options we showed you, and we'll use that to refine the search. Our job is to find a good fit, not to close a deal.

How do partner homes differ from regular listings?

Partner homes have an active relationship with ALHHub — we've visited them, know their staff, and are confident in their care quality. They appear first in our directory and on city pages with a "Partner" or "Featured" badge. The 2,000+ other homes in our directory are licensed by AZDHS but we haven't personally vetted them. We can still help place families there; we're just more cautious about giving them a personal endorsement.

Can facilities pay to be featured?

Partner facilities do pay us referral fees when families move in — that's how we stay free for families. Featured placement in our directory is part of our partner program. We're transparent about this. We don't accept homes as partners unless we're confident in their care quality — our reputation depends on it.

What's the difference between an assisted living home and center?

In Arizona, an Assisted Living Home is licensed for 10 or fewer residents. An Assisted Living Center is licensed for 11 or more. Homes tend to feel more intimate and residential; centers have more amenities and programming. Both provide the same core services — personal care, meals, medication management. The right choice depends on your loved one's preferences and care needs.

Can I tour facilities before deciding?

Absolutely — we encourage it. We can help arrange tours at homes you're interested in. Touring in person is the best way to evaluate a home: observe how staff interact with residents, check cleanliness, ask about staffing ratios, and get a feel for the culture. Most families tour two or three homes before making a decision.
